HISTORY

In 1976, Jules S. Burg, Renee Lang Burg and Adele Stewart, fellow counselors and very dear friends, saw a need for quality, low-cost mental health services in the San Fernando Valley. Together they conceived of the idea and founded The Center for Individual and Family Counseling, a local community service agency dedicated to providing counseling services to the local area.

CIFC started out in a small, three bed room house on Burbank Boulevard in Valley Village, providing para-professional counseling services. At that time, we were the only non-emergency outpatient facility in the San Fernando Valley. As CIFC’s reputation grew, so did the need for staff counselors. A program was created for graduate and post-graduate psychology students, so they could receive clinical training under the supervision of licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.

After over 30 years, CIFC continues to flourish. We have over 35 Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) Trainees and Interns working as Staff Counselors, supervised by our loyal and dedicated staff of Licensed MFT’s. We counsel over 250 clients per week, and are a community awarded/honored MFT training facility.

THE FOUNDERS

Jules S. Burg, Ph.D., LMFT

Now retired from his years of service, Jules, a co-founder and Clinical Director of CIFC brought with him 30 years of teaching, administrative and counseling experience from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Upon receiving his license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1969, he began his private therapy practice in the San Fernando Valley. Jules was also a faculty member at several local colleges and universities.

Renée Lang Burg, M.A., LMFT

Renée began her career as a Counseling Paraprofessional before becoming licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1979. As the Administrative Director, the former business management consultant parlayed her business expertise into creating a financially sound non-profit agency. Besides shouldering the financial responsibilities at CIFC, Renée had a private therapy practice and was a trainer/ mentor to the trainees and interns until her passing in 1997. Despite the tremendous loss that was felt throughout the agency, her spirit is still present in every aspect of CIFC.

Adele Stewart, Counseling Paraprofessional

Adele started her career as a Paraprofessional Counselor, and continued to see clients for over thirty years. During the early years at CIFC, she was responsible for training new Interns and growing the vision of the agency. Adele’s contributions to CIFC were enormous, including sitting on the Board of Trustees up until her recent passing in 2008.
