Center for Individual and Family Counseling Couch

History

Jules S. Burg, Renee Lang Burg and Adele Stewart, fellow Counselors and very dear friends, saw a need for quality, low-cost mental health services in the San Fernando Valley. Together they conceived of the idea and founded The Center for Individual and Family Counseling in 1976.

The Center started out in a small, three bed room house on Burbank Boulevard in Valley Village, providing counseling services daytime and evening hours, seven days a week.

Lay members of the community--Paraprofessionals--were trained and supervised by licensed mental health professionals. As The Center’s reputation grew, so did the need for Counselors with a graduate level education in Counseling and Psychotherapy. A Training Program was created for these graduate students--Trainees and Interns--to be trained and supervised as Counselors by our licensed professional supervisors.

The agency continued to grow and in 1980, moved to our current location at 5445 Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood. Currently we have 36 Trainees and Interns working as Staff Counselors with our incredible team of supervisors. We also provide mental health service to over 250 clients a week.

THE FOUNDERS

Jules S. Burg, Ph.D., LMFT

Now retired from his years of service, Jules, a co-founder and Clinical Director of CIFC brought with him 30 years of teaching, administrative and counseling experience from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Upon receiving his license as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1969, he began his private therapy practice in the San Fernando Valley. Jules was also a faculty member at several local colleges and universities. From his counseling experience, Jules saw the need for the expansion of competent, low-cost psychotherapeutic services in the community and with Renee Burg and Adele Stewart, CIFC was created.

Renée Lang Burg, M.A., LMFT

The second of our co-founders, Renée began her career as a Counseling Paraprofessional before becoming licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1979. As the Administrative Director, the former business management consultant parlayed her business expertise into creating a financially sound non-profit agency. Besides shouldering the financial responsibilities at CIFC, Renée had a private therapy practice, and was a trainer/ mentor to the trainees and interns until her passing in 1997. Despite the tremendous loss that was felt throughout the agency, her spirit is still present in every aspect of CIFC.

Adele Stewart, Counseling Paraprofessional

Adele, the third co-founder, is still seeing clients part-time at CIFC as a Paraprofessional Counselor. She has been a dedicated founder, trainer of new counselors, member of the Board of Trustees, and Counselor for over thirty years. Adele has made an incredible impact on the agency and is a gifted teacher/ mentor to the current generation of Counselors training at CIFC.
